On twitter we've seen a huge number of followers that
appear, follow and then unfollow.
At first we wondered what was going on - until we realised
that these were accounts hoping we had automatic #followback enabled. We don't,
and here's why.
Firstly, it's lazy. If we automatically opt in to listen to
you, chance are we won't actually end up reading what you are saying.
Secondly, we want to know who we are following. We try and
at least read your bio description and last few tweets.
Thirdly, there are too many spammers on twitter. While we
love engaging with other authors, avid readers and those merely curious as to
whether we can finish this challenge, we don't want to see millions of adverts.
That's why we #followback manually - and of course we can't
follow more than 1000 per day due to twitter's own limits. If we're not
following you yet, give us a little time - we know it's old fashioned, but we
like to know who we're talking to.
Thanks,
